McDonald's Embraces Anime

It is common knowledge that many anime series give a nod to global franchises, McDonald's being no exception. Likewise, McDonald's in Japan often responds with commercials and promotions inspired by beloved anime. For instance, the recent adverts themed around Kiki’s Delivery Service are a prime example. But now, McDonald's in the U.S. seems to be catching up with the trend and increasingly acknowledging the influence of anime on pop culture.

The latest venture is a limited edition, Special Grade Garlic Sauce, inspired by McDonald’s Japan's delectable Black Garlic Sauce and the globally acclaimed anime, Jujutsu Kaisen.

Special Grade Garlic Sauce - A Jujutsu Kaisen Twist

The new Special Grade Garlic Sauce is an intriguing blend of garlic and soy sauce, offering a hint of tangy sweetness that sets it apart. But what makes this sauce all the more special for anime fans is the character-centric packaging. The sauce packets bear unique lids showcasing popular Jujutsu Kaisen characters, including Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki, Satoru Gojo, Kento Nanami, Suguru Geto, Mahito, and Sukuna.

However, to get your hands on this limited edition treat, anime fans will need to use the McDonald's app. Starting on July 9, the sauce will be accessible via the app, with a special tasting event taking place in New York City a day prior to the official release. It has been confirmed that the availability of this special sauce will be limited. However, the exact duration of its availability has not been made clear.

McDonald's: An Expanding Anime Love Affair

The introduction of the Special Grade Garlic Sauce is not the first time McDonald’s in America has shown its affinity for anime. Earlier this year, McDonald’s paid homage to anime by launching a unique 'WcDonald’s' campaign. WcDonald’s is a common spoof name for McDonald's featured in many anime and manga series. This particular campaign featured entertaining anime shorts aired by Studio Pierrot.

The original Jujutsu Kaisen manga, published by VIZ Media, has been a massive success. The manga series written by Gege Akutami is celebrated for its storytelling and character dynamics. The main protagonist, Yuji Itadori is a teenage character who, despite possessing immense physical strength, prefers to spend time with the school outcasts in the Occult Research Club. Their adventures begin when they accidentally unseal a cursed object, releasing untold horrors.

Given these exciting collaborations, it will be interesting to see if McDonald’s continues to incorporate anime themes in their future campaigns in America. What are your thoughts on these advertising strategies? Do you think this anime love affair is here to stay?
