[Discussion] Reinventing Siri: How Apple and Meta may Transform the AI Landscape

Recommended Posts

Apple and AI: The Future of Siri

With the ambit of AI expanding more than ever, tech giant Apple is not far behind. Apple announced its entrance into the Artificial Intelligence race with its newly introduced platform, Apple Intelligence earlier this month. In what comes as a surprise to many, the company has disclosed that it will be joining forces with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the revamped Siri. And what's more, the Wall Street Journal has reported that Apple is currently in talks with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, in search of a mutually beneficial arrangement. This deal between the two technology bigwigs, although not finalized yet, could see Meta edging into Apple's AI sphere.

Apple's AI Approach: Practical Over Pizzazz

Apple’s approach to AI may seem mundane and unabashedly pragmatic. The company is ideally using this technology to add AI-powered features like writing suggestions and custom emojis to its pre-existing products. And while this may seem unambitious to some, it also reiterates Apple’s strength — practicality over flashiness. Such an approach can be instrumental in encouraging AI adoption worldwide. Thanks to this partnership model, Apple will have the chance to expand upon its AI capabilities. An alliance with Meta could provide diversity to Apple, detaching its reliance on a single partner, while also endorsing Meta’s generative AI tech. Interestingly, the Wall Street Journal has highlighted the fact that Apple is not proposing to pay for these partnerships. Instead, Apple offers distribution opportunities to its AI partners, who can subsequently leverage this to deal with premium subscriptions.

User Privacy and Data Sharing

Elon Musk, the co-founder of OpenAI, who is now a contender via his new startup xAI, showed concern regarding the deep integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s systems. So much so, that he threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies. Countering this, Apple has assured that it will seek users’ permission before sharing any of their data or questions with ChatGPT. Moreover, any such integration with Meta would be expected to operate likewise. In recent developments, Apple disclosed that while Apple Intelligence is gearing up to be unveiled in the newest versions of its operating systems like iOS18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year, the technology will be withheld from the European Union. This is due to the restrictions imposed by the EU's Digital Markets Act, which is aimed at propelling competition in digital markets. "We are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security," Apple stated, indicating its reservation over the Act.
