Elden Ring Adaptation Teased by George R. R. Martin: Possibilities and Industry Reactions

TL;DR: George R. R. Martin hinted at a possible Elden Ring adaptation in a recent blog post, leaving fans speculating about a movie or TV series. FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki expressed openness to an adaptation, provided a strong partner collaborates, as the studio lacks experience in non-gaming media. The game's latest DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, has been highly successful, selling over five million copies and receiving critical acclaim.

A Tease of an Elden Ring Adaptation

George R. R. Martin, acclaimed author of Game of Thrones, has sparked some intrigue with a recent blog post. Known for his role in doing the world building for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, Martin addressed rumors of an adaptation for the successful action role-playing game, stating in his cryptic manner, "Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring… I have nothing to say… What rumor?" It can be inferred from this that an Elden Ring movie or TV series may indeed be underway, with Martin likely contributing in some capacity.

The Potential for Elden Ring on the Screen

Elden Ring has been widely well-received since its release, leading to numerous discussions amongst fans regarding how an adaptation might look. In a recent interview with The Guardian, FromSoftware chief Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that he would be receptive to such an idea, on the condition of a formidable partner's involvement. Miyazaki, who handled the remainder of Elden Ring's creation following Martin's worldbuilding, stated, "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example… But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium… So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play."

Success of Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree

Meanwhile, the game's most recent DLC—Shadow of the Erdtree—has seen considerable success, selling over five million copies within its first three days. Earning a perfect score in an IGN review, the expansion was praised as "raising the bar for single-player DLC expansions," and offering "fantastic new challenges for heavily invested fans to chew on."
